About the Editorial Assistant Position

We’re searching for an enthusiastic, book-loving Editorial Assistant to join our team. As an editorial assistant, you’ll assist our small team with various editorial, administrative, and marketing tasks related to book production, marketing, brand management, and fulfillment. You will work on a variety of book projects (mostly non-fiction) as well as various aspects of managing an author brand platform.

You are very organized, a self-starter, meticulous, reliable, proactive, have an eye for detail, ask questions, and are a great communicator. This is an in-office position based in Asheville. We expect you to work from our downtown Asheville office at least three days a week with some flexibility in your work schedule. You’ll be able to designate flex days where you can work from home.

Editorial Assistant Responsibilities

  • All-around book project support, including proofreading, organizing files, preparing manuscripts for print and publication
  • Corresponding with authors, fellow employees, and customers
  • Research and fact-checking
  • Writing and designing social media and blog posts, implementing SEO best practices 
  • Writing promotional and marketing copy
  • Packing and shipping book orders, warehouse, and office inventory
  • Provide administrative support to help our office and processes run smoothly 
  • Administrative duties like filing, typing, copying, scanning, organizing files, etc.
  • Running occasional errands
  • Other editorial and administrative tasks as needed 

Editorial Assistant Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in English, Marketing, Journalism, or similar field OR equivalent experience
  • Reliable transportation to downtown Asheville office, to Asheville based warehouse, and for running occasional errands
  • A love of reading
  • Self-drive, a deep sense of curiosity, and eagerness to learn new things
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills 
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines at once
  • Experience with Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and the Google Suite
  • Bonus: Experience using content management systems and analytics tools (WordPress, Elementor, Canva, and Google Search Console are a few examples)
  • Bonus: A strong grasp of UX and SEO best practices
  • Bonus: Basic graphic design skills and some knowledge of web design (including HTML and CSS) or print editorial design (including InDesign)
  • Bonus: Experience in the publishing industry or any specialized training in proofreading or copyediting

Pay, Schedule, & Benefits

  • Full-time (35 to 40 hours per week)
  • Pay: Hourly or salaried based on background and experience 
  • After one month: 10 days of paid time off per year.
