At Otterpine, we have a customized, partnership-based approach to publishing. We don’t use fixed service packages or offer individual services à la carte. Instead, we shape each partnership around the book and the larger creative, business, or organizational goals behind it. Because editorial, design, production, distribution, and marketing decisions are all connected, we consider the project as a whole and build the right team, timeline, strategy, and systems around it. Whether we’re helping bring one meaningful book into the world or building the publishing infrastructure behind an ongoing body of work, no two publishing paths are the same.
The exception is warehousing and fulfillment, which we also offer as standalone services for authors, creators, and publishers who produce books through offset printing, sell directly to readers, or both.
Because our work is highly collaborative, we take on a limited number of projects each year. We typically book new publishing partnerships for publication dates at least one year out. There are always exceptions, but we strongly recommend reaching out sooner rather than later—even if your manuscript or plans are still taking shape—so we have time to explore the right fit, timeline, and path forward together.
Writing &
Editorial
We help authors shape and strengthen their stories with a team of experienced developmental editors, line editors, copyeditors, proofreaders, and writers working across a wide range of genres and subject areas. Because every book and author is different, we build a customized editorial approach around your goals, your audience, and your budget—never a one-size-fits-all process.
We manage the many moving pieces required to take a book from edited manuscript to publication, coordinating schedules, contributors, vendors, files, formats, proofreading, metadata, ISBNs, ebook and audiobook production, distribution setup, and final quality checks. Throughout the process, we keep the project organized, anticipate how each decision may affect later stages, and help you understand the options and tradeoffs along the way.

Illustration
Our mission is to bring the book of your dreams to life. We create captivating custom illustrations to suit any project. From character-driven children’s books and functional infographics to minimalist line drawings and expansive landscapes, our portfolio encompasses a wide range of styles. Our illustration work is always drawn by a human.
Great book design does more than make a book look beautiful—it extends the ideas, tone, and intention of the writing into every visual detail, from the cover to the typography and page layout. Every book we design is created from scratch with care and intention, shaped by the words inside, the audience you want to reach, and the values you want the book to communicate.

Production
We have an international network of more than 25 printers, all of which have been thoroughly quality-tested. We do not default to print-on-demand or force every book into the same manufacturing model. Print-on-demand can be the right choice for some projects, while others benefit from short-run digital printing, offset printing, specialty production, or a combination of approaches. We are experts in print production, materials, and paper, and we love crafting books that last. We’ll fret over little details like the way your endsheets feel and the color of your headbands to help you create the highest-quality book possible.
We help authors navigate the many paths a book can take to reach readers, including trade distribution, online retail, direct sales, events, and bulk orders. From our 6,500-square-foot Asheville-area warehouse, we carefully store, quality-check, pack, and ship books, launch kits, subscription boxes, and other custom packages to readers around the world. Right-sized, eco-friendly packaging and thoughtful details help every shipment feel personal while giving authors with direct-sales platforms a way to reach readers beyond the major online retailers. We offer customized, high-touch fulfillment and kitting to clients whose book production and printing we manage, as well as to a growing roster of independent publishers and other partners.

Distribution
We build a distribution strategy around the book, its audience, and the ways readers are most likely to find and buy it. Depending on the project, that may include trade wholesalers, bookstores and libraries, major online retailers, direct-to-reader platforms, bulk and special sales, or a combination of channels. We coordinate the setup and help authors navigate decisions around formats, pricing, discounts, returns, inventory, metadata, and margins—balancing wider availability with greater control and long-term sustainability. Sales representation is not included by default, but we can engage independent reps when it supports the book’s larger strategy.
Publishing your book is often just the beginning, and we help build thoughtful marketing and publicity strategies around it—from websites, email, and social media to trade reviews, awards, events, and targeted outreach. Rooted in empathy, connection, storytelling, and experimentation, our approach looks beyond just ads and algorithms to find the right mix of strategies to reach readers, learn what resonates, and build lasting momentum.

Design
We design websites that bring the visual identity of your book and author brand to life while guiding readers toward the actions that matter most—discovering your work, joining your community, buying your books, or engaging with what you offer. Every choice, from typography and imagery to layout and navigation, is made to create a distinctive digital home that is both beautiful and purposeful.
Tell us what you’d love to make, and we’ll figure out how to make it—and whether it can be produced realistically within your budget, timeline, and quantities. We create custom merchandise that extends your book’s visual identity beyond the page, from bookmarks and tote bags to event materials and other thoughtful reader-facing pieces. We’ve even created custom knitting needles. Each item is designed to feel cohesive with the book and purposeful in how it builds recognition, deepens connection, and gives readers another way to engage with your work.
