Gravida

by Eliza Bell Schweizbach

About the book

This book is for the childbearers. And for anyone feeling alone in carrying more than seems bearable.

Moving beyond polished, idealized maternity portraits, these photographs and stories emerge from lived experience— raw, complex, and deeply human. This intimate collection reimagines the visual language of pregnancy.

A Look Inside

Gravida asks the question: “For you, how does it feel to be pregnant?” then invites us below the surface, insisting every answer deserves to be seen.

About the author

Eliza Bell Schweizbach

Eliza Bell Schweizbach is an artist and photographer living in Asheville, NC. For her, the camera is a tool for deepening curiosity, celebrating connection, and allowing people to feel seen. Since childhood, she has been enamored with the natural world, and has been markedly influenced by a lifetime spent in the Appalachian mountains. Sensitivity and storytelling are central to her work.

She holds a degree in cinematography, and her work has been featured in publications such as The Guardian and Art in America. In 2025, her Gravida portraits were selected as finalists for the LensCulture portrait awards. Intrigued by relationship and ritual, she has artfully documented weddings and families for over 20 years. If you ask nicely, she might even photograph yours.
